Surgical and conservative treatments,
relating to the musculoskeletal system and the spine.
Trauma surgery is a specialism – but one that focuses not on a specific organ, but on an entity: the injury. This broad, demanding training enables us to understand injuries within their overall context, to apply surgical techniques in an interdisciplinary manner, and to make targeted use of knowledge from related disciplines. I consciously pursue this holistic approach and cover the full spectrum of general trauma surgery and orthopedics, supplemented by specific areas of specialization, in particular spine medicine and pelvic and hip surgery.
I view the modern trauma surgeon not merely as a technically skilled operative, but as a coordinator and point of contact who assesses injuries within the broader context, consults specialists as required and coordinates treatment in collaboration with the patient’s GP.
The operation itself is only one part of the journey. Equally important are careful treatment planning and rehabilitation that take into account my patients’ personal and professional circumstances.
This applies in particular to people with tumor metastases and older patients, who require a personalised approach to maintain or regain their independence within their familiar surroundings. Minimally invasive, multimodal and conservative procedures allowing early full weight-bearing play a central role in this. As a trusted partner to my patients, this is precisely what I strive to achieve.
My surgical practice covers the full spectrum of bone and general trauma surgery, as well as orthopaedics and spinal surgery. For arthroscopic reconstructive procedures, such as those on the shoulder and knee, I work closely with specialist colleagues at the Centre for Trauma Surgery and Orthopaedics in Central Switzerland and provide personalised consultations.
During my six years as Head of Department at the University Hospital of Zurich, my work focused primarily on hip and pelvic traumatology and complex joint replacement surgery. This in particular involved the management of acetabular fractures, pelvic ring injuries and their consequences.
Not every injury requires surgery. Even with conservative treatments, close monitoring, regular check-ups and coordinated care are crucial. This also includes the professional application of casting and immobilization techniques.
The treatment of elderly patients requires specific conditions, as well as specific techniques and implants. Extensive experience in geriatric traumatology forms the basis for care tailored to their needs.
Scar treatment covers a broad spectrum, ranging from conservative methods to modern, ablative procedures. Techniques used include the fractional CO₂ laser, RF microneedling and ACP to support tissue regeneration. The primary focus is on improving the structure of the scar – in particular, preventing contractures and promoting the best possible functional outcome. For scars on exposed areas of the body, aesthetic improvement also plays a role. Complete removal of scars is generally not possible.
Second opinions can help to clarify the situation, particularly in complex cases. We offer in-depth assessments and expert reports, for example for IV, SUVA and private insurers, as well as expert reports for the courts.
Thanks to my extensive training in spinal medicine, surgery is generally only considered as a last resort. The range of treatments also includes manual therapy techniques and injections. I hold specialist qualifications in manual medicine and interventional pain management.
Wound healing does not always proceed without complications. In such cases, patience, consistency and close monitoring are crucial. Treatment is provided on an outpatient basis or, if necessary, as an inpatient, using modern dressing materials and techniques until the wound has fully healed.
ACP therapy (autologous conditioned plasma) is an autologous blood treatment for osteoarthritis and tendon and muscle injuries. In this procedure, platelet-rich plasma is prepared from the patient’s own blood and injected into the site of pain to promote healing, relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Three treatments are usually required.
In addition, we offer exosome therapy on request. This uses highly concentrated biological vesicles containing regenerative signalling molecules to specifically support tissue regeneration. It is administered as a single injection and is particularly suitable for patients for whom multiple treatments are not an option.
Metastases in the axial skeleton and the spine can significantly impair stability, freedom from pain and quality of life. The aim of treatment is to restore the ability to bear weight as quickly as possible and to enable a swift return to the patient’s normal environment. Minimally invasive procedures are predominantly used, in close coordination with oncological treatment.
My name is Kai Sprengel. After studying medicine in Hanover, I specialized early on in trauma surgery – now known as traumatology. I obtained my PhD at the University of Basel and my habilitation at the University of Zurich.
I have been working in emergency medicine since 1990, initially as a paramedic in my home region north of Bremen. As a dual-specialist in surgery and orthopedics trained in Switzerland, I have a broad and well-founded clinical background.
In my clinical career, I held a senior position at a university-affiliated tertiary care hospital. My work focused on spinal and pelvic traumatology, complemented by ongoing work in general traumatology.
I have a particular professional interest in the treatment of tumors of the musculoskeletal system, especially metastases. As a private lecturer, I continue to be involved in teaching and research at the University of Zurich. Through this work in teaching and professional societies, I have built up an extensive national and international network, which informs my clinical practice.
I have been practising in my own practice since 2021.
Together with experienced colleagues, I co-founded the Center for Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics in Central Switzerland (ZUO) and serve as its managing partner and center coordinator. It is important to me to personally support my patients every step of the way, from initial care through surgical treatment to full rehabilitation.
