Services at a glance

In musculoskeletal medicine, one encounters more and more colleagues with subspecialisations, as it is hardly possible to follow the rapid developments in medicine without them. This is certainly inevitable. These specializations are mostly limited to organ systems and start early in the training. In my opinion, traumatology is also a specialization, but due to its complexity it requires a correspondingly longer training period, which many young colleagues are no longer willing to invest in and thus remain limited. Only with this broad training, however, can one learn the necessary knowledge of related disciplines and specialists. Furthermore, there are specialties and surgical techniques that the organ specialist only touches upon briefly in his training, while the traumatologist perfects them and learns to apply them to various injuries. That is why I see the modern trauma surgeon, not only as a technically well-trained surgeon, but also as a team player and "caretaker" for the patient, who classifies the injury or injuries in the overall picture and coordinates the treatment together with the general practitioner.

It may be necessary to involve specialists in order to achieve the best possible result, but pure surgery, if it becomes necessary, is only one key to success. Primary treatment planning and then further rehabilitation, taking into account the respective private and professional profile, is perhaps just as important and requires a competent contact person in the form of the traumatologist. This also applies to the growing group of elderly patients who, like patients with tumor metastases, always require a highly individualized treatment concept in order to maintain their independence in their familiar surroundings for as long as possible or to regain it as quickly as possible. Minimally invasive, multimodal/disciplinary and conservative procedures, with the early possibility of full weight-bearing, are of great importance. In this sense, I would like to stand by my patients with confidence.

Surgical treatment

Surgical treatment

My surgical expertise includes general traumatology as well as orthopedics and spine surgery. For arthroscopic reconstructive procedures, e.g. in the shoulder and knee, I am happy to provide advice and work together with experienced specialists in this field.

Conservative treatment

Conservative treatment

Not every injury requires surgery, although even with non-surgical procedures, close care, ongoing monitoring and therapy coordination is important. I am happy to support you in this and perform the necessary bandaging and plastering techniques.

Spine treatment

Due to my broad training in various therapeutic methods of spinal medicine, surgery is typically only indicated at the end of the treatment chain, if at all. My range of treatment also includes manual medicine and infiltrations.

Hip and pelvis treatment

Hip and pelvis

The treatment of injuries and their consequences, including endoprosthetics of any degree of difficulty, is something I have been able to accomplish with particular expertise in over 6 years as head of a university unit. The treatment of hip and pelvis has emerged as one of my main focuses.

Bone Metastases treatment

Bone Metastases

Metastases to the axial skeleton and spine can compromise stability, cause severe pain and affect quality of life. During treatment, the focus is on the immediate and full resilience as well as a rapid return to familiar surroundings. To achieve this, I rely mainly on special, less invasive procedures. Of course, this is always done in close coordination with further cancer therapy.

Geriatric Traumatology

Geriatric Traumatology

The treatment of injuries in the elderly requires not only specific conditions but also knowledge of special techniques and implants. Through years of treatment in geriatric traumatology, I have been able to deepen these techniques more and more.

Complicated traumatological wounds

Complicated traumatological wounds

Wound healing after injuries does not always proceed optimally. In such cases, a lot of patience and perseverance is often required on the part of the patient and the treatment team. I am happy to care for you as an outpatient and, if necessary, as an inpatient using modern dressing materials and techniques to ensure continuous treatment until healing.

Second opinion and expert opinion

Second opinion and expert opinion

Second opinions can alleviate uncertainty for patients and practitioners, especially in complicated cases. I am available to provide you with a well-founded second or expert opinion.

About me

My name is Kai Sprengel. I received my doctorate from the University of Basel and my assistant professor from the University of Zurich. Since 1990 I have been working in the field of emergency medicine, first as a paramedic in my home north of Bremen, after my medical studies in Hannover I became interested in trauma surgery, now called traumatology. As a double specialist in surgery and orthopaedics, who has been a resident in Switzerland since 1999, I can draw on a wide-range and well-rounded training background. In the last decade of my employment, I have focused on spine medicine along with pelvic and hip surgery in a leading position at a university level one trauma center without ever losing contact with general traumatology in theory and practice. I have also developed a special interest in the treatment of tumors of the musculoskeletal system, primarily metastases. Through my involvement in various educational formats and professional societies over the years, I have built up a large domestic and international network for the benefit of my patients. Since 2021 I have been working in my own practice.
